This is a letter of introduction that I wrote the first week of the semester. I was to showcase what I thought my strengths and weaknesses were as a writer as well as to showcase any background knowledge that I had about sustainability.

Dear Dr. Carpenter,

I’m Sophia Rosario and I am a biology major. The reason I decided to major in biology is because my career goal is to go into healthcare, specifically to become a cardiologist. If I’m being honest I’m not the biggest fan of writing. Grammar was never my strong suit and writing is just an overall stressful experience for me. I think science writing is somewhat difficult because it requires being able to put things like data into writing that is easy to comprehend. I think deciphering science texts are difficult because sometimes they require a certain level of prior knowledge. I haven’t had to help a family member with a science related issue before. If i had to communicate a science issue to my community I would just use a lot of analogies to help them with following the logic that is needed for this science issue. I think that one of my flaws with my writing is that I struggle with having a professional tone sometimes even when writing something like a research paper. I’m hoping to correct that with the help of this course. I also think that Standard American English does make science writing more accessible since Standard American English is widely taught. I don’t know much about sustainability besides the fact that it’s usually associated with reducing waste. For example recycling is encouraged and to invest in buying reusable products. That’s about it from me.

From,

Sophia Rosario
